HONOLULU — A 26-year-old man charged with murder in a fatal stabbing under an H-1 freeway viaduct last year is claiming self-defense.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports attorneys made opening statements Tuesday in the trial of Herwin Magbulos.
He’s charged with killing 59-year-old Darryl Wong at a homeless camp near Honolulu Airport.
Defense lawyer Edward Aquino says Magbulos gave Wong money to buy drugs, and when Magbulos asked for the drugs, Wong tried to hit and choke Magbulos.
Aquino said Magbulos stabbed Wong with a knife he found on the ground and a smaller one that he was carrying.
Prosecutor Kaina Awong says Magbulos went to the homeless encampment to kill Wong. He says Wong was stabbed in the abdomen and back and had defensive wounds.
